Note: A few antivirus programs keep detecting a couple of the included files as viruses. This is false positive. These vendors were informed numerous times and the serious companies such as DrWeb and Kaspersky, update their signatures to remove the false detection within a few hours after being informed. Others, such as McAfee, despite all the efforts and contacts, don’t do anything to update their signatures. For a few unknown ones, which use third party signatures, there is no way to contact them or they simply don’t respond. This program will never knowingly distribute any kind of malware.

  1. Does anyone know if there will be an update soon? Since the Windows 10 update the other week, all my thumb drives will now say that there is a MBR lock, the drive cannot be prepped and the grub4dos setup will not work either. I have tried dismounting, reformatting, and running diskpart to clean the drives. Nothing works so far to make the drives bootable again.

It is happening on all my thumb drives, so I suspect that the Windows 10 update broke it like it did with some of my motherboard tools a while back till ASUS came out with some new patches on their end. I have tried to roll back the updates from control panel, but the big Windows update that came out is disabled from being removed.

        • Just tested on fully updated Win10 Pro, version 1803, OS build 17134.319 and it worked just fine.
Formatted with FBInst in FAT32 and NTFS.
Cleaned and reformatted disk from diskpart, then tried again the auto-format option- no issues.
Cleaned again and reformatted from diskpart, this time selected syslinux option to test grub4dos installation- no issues again.

Need more details from your setup in order to troubleshoot further. There might be something else on your machine, unrelated to the Windows version, which is causing these issues, or you are on some other Windows version.

    • I have confirmed that this is a Windows 10 update issue. I loaded a non-updated Windows 10 VM on my desktop and Winsetupfromusb works just fine. It’s only after updating Windows that it quit working and throws the locked MBR error.

  2. Hi.
    When you’ll update your program?
It doesn’t work with newest Windows 10 version 1809 (October release) “source is not supported”.
    Regards,

    • Mark,
The current version of WinsetupfromUSB (1.8) works just fine with Windows 10 version 1809. I’ve used it with both the 32-bit and 64-bit ISO. You are probably trying to use the esd file or the dual iso, which are not supported, as clearly stated in the download section:

“Windows 10 – single ISOs created by Microsoft Media Creation Tool or downloaded from Microsoft should work. Dual ISOs made by the same tool (x32 and x64 in a single ISO) are NOT supported yet due to the changed structure. Such source can still be added using the previous versions which dump entire contents as they are, 1.0 beta8 for example. Limitations- such source needs to be added first, and any other sources of the same type, but not the same x32+x64, has to be added using 1.6 beta 2 or later.”

  3. Hi, I had this problem Write error MBR write protected, i found that Acronis True Image was blocking the USB unit to RMPrepUSB, my solution was uninstall Acronis True Image but maybe you can stop some service of Acronis and try again
I hope this work for somebody

  4. Using v1.8 on Win7 x64. I’m unable to add Kaspersky or BitDefender ISO’s. It simply seems to copy them to the ISO folder and that’s it. What could I be doing wrong?

  5. It seems that latest Win10 1809 (maybe also 1803) iso doesn’t boot properly after creating the bootable USB using Winsetupfromusb v1.8… It keeps saying “waiting for usb drive to initialize…” after bootup. It doesn’t get to the installation part.
Win10 1709 iso works fine. I found out if I copy the boot.wim from 1709 folder under USB://winsetup/1709dir to USB://winsetup/1809dir, the USB drive would boot fine and installation would work.
I hope this gets fixed on the next release.
Thank you for your fine product!
    Keep up the good work!

    • It does work with 1803 and 1809, have a look at the comments above.
Are you using stock ISO or is it modified in any way?

      • I’m using stock 1809 Microsoft iso, English x64 version. Still has problem with waiting USB disks to initialize…

        • There must be something else involved. Program doesn’t do anything specific about these sources, there are no adjustments needed, unless Microsoft make drastic changes. More likely it’s something around the USB drivers, USB drive, boot timing etc.

          • I just found out the boot.wim in winsetup directory is different than the boot.wim in iso file… Could this be the problem?
Also, I did a test with Microsoft’s “Windows 7 USB DVD download tool” creating a Win10 bootable usb drive. It works fine. Both winsetupfromusb and Microsoft’s tool used the same iso…
