  1. A couple of questions….

How do you sucessfully mount an iso in the windows 8 setup? do you modify the boot.wim in any way?
I have tried to accomplish the same thing myself many times, but he will never read the iso mounted from grub in windows 8 setup…
Where do you install the imdisk driver into the setup program?

    • Boot.wim is modified, executing a small program which waits for the USB disks to be initialized, installs drivers if that advanced option was used, installs imdisk, then searches for the given ISO, mounts it and starts the Setup.

Grub4dos mounted ISO is gone when system switches to protected mode, this applies to any OS, except the ones which are real mode such as DOS.
Windows has no clue what grub4dos or any other program in real mode did, unless a special driver for this purpose such as firadisk or winvblock is used.

  2. Thanks.
I found what I’d missed (did not run the “diskpart rescan” command after mounting the iso via imdisk).

    An idea for the setup.
Why not use an Autounattend.xml and a cmd file in the root of the usb to do those things…?
That would remove the need too modify anything within (or from) the iso and thereby making sure of compatibility with later windows versions (and those discs with multiple windows editions in one iso, and so on)…

    (Works on Vista and later)

    • That doesn’t work for USB hard drives and when it does, it can’t help to install drivers before USB disk is accessible, i.e. install chipset/usb3 drivers to help showing USB disks on USB3 ports in Win7 for example where there is no USB3 support. Besides, on some systems usb disks might take long time to show up, and setup does not wait for them everything custom fails. Currently the custom program waits this to happen and rescans disks until the iso is available.

  3. If you check the WinSetupFromUSB-1-4.exe file with virustotal.com, you’ll get some warning (5/55) about a possible trojan. This is annoying. Please add a short statement on your page, that the file is actually virus-free.

    regards,

    • I’ve done that many times, also writing to all AV vendors detecting something. The few left cannot be contacted or simply don’t respond. You might also pay attention who is detecting and decide for yourself how well trusted they are and whether one should be bothered at all with their results.

  4. Is it possible to put all the files and folders (like WINSETUP,efi, boot, bootmgr, gldr …) from root of USB drive to one subdirectory?

  5. Hello!

I use WinSetupFromUSB 1.5 and I have 2 hard drive(one hdd, second sdd).
Hdd is connect to sata 3 master.
Sdd is connect to sata 4 master.

When SATA is in IDE mode everything is ok – installer windows 2003 R2 SP2 recognize both internal drive and I can install win2003 on first partition hdd( before that I have to disconnect one drive so thanks a lot 😉 ).

When SATA is in AHCI mode I choose:
    1 auto-detect and use F6 SATA/RAID/ISCI driver
    2 NT5_x86-32-bit ( I have AMD motherboard )
3 I press F6 and choose ACHI SATA
after that is show up only one internal disk(why?) ( hdd) and USB drive. I installed on first partition of hdd without any problems.

After installation win2003 recognize only hdd( only one internal drive). I tried device and disk manager( find, rescan, add new hardware) but second internal drive didn’t show up.
I switched SATA in IDE mode and then show up.

I tried also second option : 2 auto-detect and use F6 SATA/RAID/ISCI driver + firadisk but effect it was the same.

What i have to do, so that installer recognize both internal disks in AHCI mode?

    • This is 32 bit version, right?
Why don’t you try to integrate the SATA drivers in the source, FAQ #3?
Other than that I have no other ideas, this is weird behaviour, never seen it, it’s either all disks or none visible, not the half 🙂

      • Yes it is 32 bit version.
        I didn’t integrate because I wanted try winsetupfromusb ;-).
I accomplished and so successful, do not have to longer disconnect one drive to install Win2003 in IDE mode.
I went after success and tried AHCI. But this time, success very half-hearted 😉
        Maybe is fault motherboard?
Will good if somebody check that kind situation with 2 internal hard drive.

        • I’ve tested long ago with more than 2 drives, but what you experience has more to do with windows or the motherboard.

          • Yes of course!
Linux (solydK 64bit) recognize all drive in AHCI.
So Win2003 is guilty. The problem applies only to AHCI.

I am surprised that Windows does not detect the disk in disk managment, but the problem starts in a text installer(doesn’t regonize all drives)

        • What Brand and type motherboard ?? At Motherboard your have IDE (socket) for IDE CDROM/DVD ?? if you have, include in your motherboard you must select SATA IDE mode and for windows 2003 you must select SATA IDE mode.

          Thx

  6. I am using 2.2 beta. The “Cancel” button is grayed out during use and cannot be used. I have to use task manager to kill the app.

Also, not your problem but Bitdefender has to be disabled or else it quarantines many files while building the destination.

    • 2.2 beta? There is no such version…
      What exactly are you using?
I’ve reported the false positives to all AV companies, many already responded and updated the signatures.
